MEDIA RELEASE: Canadian Women’s Chamber of Commerce Acquires Innovators & Entrepreneurs Foundation, Announces Catherine Chan as Interim CEO

[TORONTO, ON.  September 9, 2024] – The Canadian Women’s Chamber of Commerce (CanWCC) proudly announces its acquisition of the Innovators & Entrepreneurs Foundation (IEF), effective July 2024. This strategic move marks a significant milestone in CanWCC’s commitment to promoting equity within the innovation and business landscape across Canada.

The Innovators & Entrepreneurs Foundation (IEF) has distinguished itself through its rigorous educational programs aimed at fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurs. Dedicated to inclusivity, IEF has particularly championed the interests of those belonging to racialized and equity-deserving communities, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities.

“The acquisition of IEF comes at a time of significant growth and momentum for CanWCC, which has been rapidly expanding across Canada thanks to the launch of our Flip the Script program. ” said Nancy Wilson, Founder & CEO of CanWCC. 

Wilson added, “Members of both CanWCC and IEF can expect continued dedication to advancing under-represented entrepreneurs and promoting inclusive economic policies.”

IEF’s commitment to research and education aligns with CanWCC’s mission to provide valuable resources and networking opportunities to women-owned businesses. This acquisition ensures enhanced support and community for both organizations.

Subsequent to this transfer, an interim board of directors have volunteered to govern the organization including: Jenn Juby, former IEF CEO; Brenda Halloran, former IEF Board Chair, Natasha Morano; Nancy Wilson; and Catherine Chan.

In their first act, the new board has appointed Catherine Chan as Interim CEO for IEF. 

“As a longtime admirer of IEF’s work, I’m honoured and excited to be trusted with the task of guiding IEF into the future,” said Chan. She continued, “In the coming months I’ll be developing the strategic plan to present to the board, hiring a permanent CEO, and working closely with IEF’s community and network to secure funding that will allow us to continue this organization’s tradition of seeing equitable opportunities for under-served founders and innovators.”

About the Innovators & Entrepreneurs Foundation:

Founded in 2020 by Startup Canada, IEF is a national charity dedicated to support, educate & celebrate innovation & entrepreneurship among business owners in marginalized communities. The CANIE Awards and Microgrants were IEF’s signature programs in 2022 and 2022. The organization further supported their network with robust and ongoing educational programming, including a focus on mental health for entrepreneurs.
